In its opulent setting on the banks of the Palmiet River and a private lake in the Elgin Valley, Lothian Vineyards shines in a class all of its own. Years of searching for the perfect location finally revealed Elgin’s cool-climate terroir as an elegant setting for growing grapes to produce exceptional Burgundian-style Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Riesling and Rose varietals. The Wilson family’s non-interventionist artisanal wine-making technique flows into the feel of Lothian House: a feat of modern architecture, designed with sensitivity towards the environment.
Originally from Scotland, the Wilson family hail from three generations of Cape winemakers, having grown up on their grandmother’s Rust en Vrede vineyard in the 1950’s and 60’s.
Gavin and Ewen’s dedication to excellence is reflected in their authentic and traditionalist approach to Burgundian-style winemaking and their choice of winemaker. The artistry that winemaker Stefan Gerber employs during his winemaking process could be described as graceful and elegant, allowing the fruit to reach its own full expression.
Stefan believes wholeheartedly in not forcing any particular style onto the fruit. As the naturally cool climate in Elgin plays ideal host to Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Rose and Riesling varietals, Stefan coupled his non-interventionist winemaking techniques with this natural harmony to ensure their grape’s true flavours are extracted, resulting in exquisite, award-wining wines.

Very pale colour with green hues; the aroma has a hint of the classic Lothian Riesling characters but is most redolent of green mango, nectarines and lychees. The palate shows great length and finesse with a vibrancy of perfumed fruits such as guava and sweet peach, overlaid with a touch of white cherry, sorbet and clove. The balance of the wine is succulent and mouth-watering and invites a second glass.
Pinot Noir 2013
This wine has a deep, ruby red hue with a fragrant boquet of red plums, raspberry and black cherry overlaid with integrated oak spice. The palate shows ripe, red berry fruit and cherry flavours with a lingering fruit sweetness. Tannins are fine and integrated, making the wine immediately approachable.
